On August 18, Vail Mountain announced its target date to kickoff one of its most anticipated winter seasons in years: Friday, November 13, 2026. If you’ve, like us, been counting down the days until you can hit the slopes and carve through fresh powder, now’s the time to start planning your trip.

Whether you’re a Vail local or a first-time visitor excited for your winter getaway, Opening Day is more than just the day lifts start running. For locals, it’s a ritual: diehard skiers and boarders show up before sunrise, thermos in hand, and camp chairs staked out, all seeking first-chair bragging rights. For those who are visiting, it’s the festive feel of the Village dressed for winter, live music, and lifts running, confirming the winter season has officially begun.

What to Know About Vail Mountain’s Soft Opening Day

With slopes planned to open on Friday, November 13, 2026 for the 2026-27 season, it will be one of the earliest Opening Days Vail has had in recent years. 

While this is a very exciting announcement, however, it’s good to keep in mind that this date is not set in stone. Vail Resorts sets these dates in hopes that weather conditions cooperate and temps are low enough. Nothing is truly guaranteed until the lists are actually turning; however, an early target date is a good sign for anyone eager to get back on the slopes. 

Vail's Opening Day Compared to Other Colorado Resorts

Vail is not the only Colorado resort gearing up for an early start. Breckenridge is aiming for November 6, giving it a slight head start on Vail. Beaver Creek and Crested Butte are planning for later in the month, on November 25. So Vail’s November 13 target puts us comfortably in the middle of the pack. 
 
For skiers and riders trying to figure out where to plan an opening weekend trip, that timing puts Vail in the sweet spot. Early enough to feel like a true season kickoff, with enough time for the mountain to make enough fresh powder and build out solid terrain before the crowds arrive.

Snowmaking technology has come a long way, but it still needs cold enough temperatures to produce enough terrain. The terrain and open slopes are typically limited compared to peak season, but that’s part of the charm. You’re not there for every run on the mountain; you’re there for the first run of the year.

Which Lifts and Trails Open First

In recent years, Vail’s Opening Day terrain has centered around its two main base areas: Vail Village and Lionshead. Gondola One, at the base of Vail Village, and the Eagle Bahn Gondola, at Lionshead, are typically the first to take skiers up the mountain. From there, trails like the Ramshorn and Swingsville runs are typically open with limited terrain as well as some beginner-friendly trails that are accessible by lifts near Lionshead.

Early-Season Snow Conditions and Snowmaking

The snow you’ll find during opening weekend is typically a mixture of machine-made snow and whatever nature has delivered so far. Vail’s snowmaking system covers key frontside terrain, giving the mountain a solid base to open even before natural snowfall. 

Conditions on Opening Day tend to favor groomed cruisers over deep powder enthusiasts, so it is smart to set expectations accordingly. The runs may not be in midwinter condition yet, but the energy of being back on the slopes more than makes up for it.

Should You Buy Your Epic Pass Before Opening Day?

If you are planning on more than a day or two on the mountain this season, the Epic Pass is something you may want to consider, and timing your purchase matters more than a lot of people realize. Epic Pass pricing is not a flat rate that remains steady all year. It increases the closer you get to and the farther you get in the season. 

In short, the earlier in the year you buy your pass, the less you pay. Be sure to get your pass before Opening Day!

How Epic Pass Pricing Changes Throughout the Year

The Epic Pass pricing is on a tiered schedule, with the lowest prices available when the pass first goes on sale in the spring with early-bird rates, followed by a series of increases as the season approaches. Pricing typically increases first in late spring, then again in late summer, with sales continuing into early winter until the pass sells out or the season is underway.

By the time Opening Day is here, the pass has already gone through several price increases. Here are the current price tiers: 

Epic Pass: $1,145 (adults), $909 (new pricing for ages 18-30 and 13-17) and $585 (children aged 5-12) 
Epic Local Pass: $849 (adults), $675 (ages 18-30 and 13-17), and $445 (children aged 5-12)

Why Buying Sooner Costs You Less

In past years, adult Epic Pass prices have climbed by anywhere from $20 to $30+ at each increase, and the Epic Local Pass follows a similar pattern. Every increase adds up, especially for families buying multiple passes. 
Beyond locking in the best price, getting your pass earlier sometimes comes with additional perks, like bonus friend tickets. Opening Weekend Events and Après in Vail Village

Opening Day has become a true winter celebration in Vail, one that locals and visitors look forward to year after year. Vail Village is in full party mode, with free live music and DJs stationed right at the base areas, spontaneous dance parties on the cobblestone streets, and an overall feeling of true camaraderie. Restaurants throughout the Village join in on the fun, too, with warm drinks, seasonal menus, and noticeable festive energy as the après ski crowd settles in for the evening.

In recent seasons, Opening Weekend festivities have also included a free outdoor concert series called Stoke Sessions, held at Checkpoint Charlie right in the heart of the village, kicking off on Opening Day and continuing on Fridays through early December. If it returns for 2026-27, it is worth building a Friday afternoon around.
